Cubicat

Domestic cats are semi-domesticated animals that retain their wild instincts however, not all of them have the freedom to show these behaviours when living in an indoor environment. Cubicat focuses on enhancing living spaces for indoor cats by creating a stimulating space that allows them to express their natural behaviours.

This project aims to enhance living spaces for both indoor cats and cat owners. Research indicated that current living environments are human-centred and repetitive, which can result in obesity, behavioural problems, inactivity, boredom and attention seeking in indoor cats. The only cat-centred space within a house generally comprises of a single cat tower that many cat owners find difficult to transport, assemble, clean, is bulky and not aesthetic.

The Cubicat creates a customisable place for cats to explore and play in. Cat owners have the freedom to rearrange the layout of the panels, creating new areas of interest. Additionally, it was designed so that the panels can be easily assembled and disassembled for transport.

Another area of focus during the design process was ensuring that the product was easily cleanable as cats are prone to fur balls, vomiting and occasional spraying. The cushions incorporated a waterproof polyurethane layer to protect the polyester foam on the inside from getting soiled.

Cubicat comes flat packed in a set of four cubes which can be placed together or scattered around the house. It can be stacked in several configurations to create different types of human furniture such as a side table, shelf, seat, or bedside table. If one panel gets damaged, it can easily be replaced by purchasing a replacement, prolonging the product lifespan. By combining both human and cat furniture, space no longer needs to be allocated for a bulky cat tower.

Cubicat creates an environment that both humans and cats can enjoy, allowing them to have the best of both worlds.
